Journey to Excellence

About The Journey to Excellence

About this video

This film describes the Journey to Excellence and its five associated areas: learning and teaching, vision and leadership, partnerships, people and culture and ethos.

Journey to Excellence

The Journey to Excellence is a professional development resource in five parts:

  • Part one - Aiming for Excellence
  • Part two - Exploring Excellence
  • Part three - How good is our school? and The Child at the Centre
  • Part four - Planning for Excellence
  • Part five - The Journey to Excellence website

Take a look at the key documents section of this site for more information on these areas.

The first two parts were produced as a two-part print publication. Part two introduced the concept of 'transformational grids', which show how schools can improve their good practice and make it excellent. These have very recently been renamed 'improvement guides' and updated to reflect current national developments such as Curriculum for Excellence and Getting it Right for Every Child and to reflect up-to-date evidence of what constitutes 'excellence' in learning.

This website

This website presents videos of excellent practice from across Scotland and a range of other resources for use in reflection, discussion and planning for transformational change. All films are also available through iTunes U. Other resources include:

  • learning together packs to support individual and collegiate working
  • research summaries and extracts
  • famous Scots describing what excellence means to them
  • leading educational thinkers talking about key issues.

Five areas of excellence

HMIE has identified five broad areas of excellence which relate to key processes within schools, pre-school centres and services for children, which have a positive impact on the quality of learning they experience and the outcomes they achieve. These broad areas are:

Curriculum for Excellence

The Journey to Excellence provides professionals with the necessary support to deliver Curriculum for Excellence and enable every child and young person in Scotland to develop the capacities, attitudes, capabilities and skills which are the outcomes for all.

By taking action in the five broad areas noted above, schools, nurseries and services can help children and young people make the most of their skills and abilities and achieve as well as they are able.
