Case studies

The dimensions of excellence are not independent from each other. These longer case study movies feature schools showing aspects of excellence across the ten dimensions.

Case study: St Andrew's Secondary School

St Andrew’s is a large secondary school situated within City of Glasgow. This case study illustrates how the school places high quality learning and teaching at the heart of its day to day work. Key features include developing an ethos of achievement, creating a vision for excellence and building leadership amongst all staff and young people.

Case study: Blairmore Nursery School

Blairmore Nursery School caters for pupils which caters for pupils aged 3-5 years, some with additional support needs. The staff use thematic planning to promote creative skills with the young learners and to enrich the learning environment. This helps the learners develop their imagination through contextualised play and builds their confidence ready for the transition to primary school.

Case study: St Patrick's Primary School

St Patrick’s is a primary school situated within South Lanarkshire Council. This case study illustrates how the school demonstrates features of excellence across a range of key dimensions. This includes helping learners to develop metacognition and thinking skills, planning and assessment, and fostering a whole school approach to leadership.

Case study: Abercorn School

Abercorn School caters for pupils with additional support needs. This case study illustrates how the school provides learning experiences that help pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to take their place in society and gain employment. A key feature of this case study is how staff work together to raise the confidence and self-esteem of learners.

Case study: Notre Dame High School

Notre Dame is the only state secondary school in Scotland that caters only for girls. This case study illustrates the ways in which the school sustains a community of innovation and challenge learning. Key features include developing emotional intelligence, a curriculum for excellence and empowering all staff and young people.

Case study: Allan's Primary School

Allan's Primary is a long established primary school. Staff, pupils and parents work together closely which has created a whole school ethos of positivity and achievement. Parents are notably involved and feel very much part of Allan's Primary School.

Campsie View School caters for pupils aged 2-19 with complex learning difficulties. This movie shows how staff tailor the learning for pupils, putting learning at the forefront and provide challenging opportunities to ensure entitlement for learners is met.

Case study: Glebe School

Glebe School caters for young people with additional support needs. Over the last few years staff, pupils and parents have been on a journey to turn the school around after a poor HMIE inspection. Glebe School now enjoys an ethos of achievement and continuous improvement.

St George's is an independent school that caters for girls aged 3 to 18. This case study illustrates how the school places excellence at the heart of its day-to-day work. Key features include planning a curriculum for excellence, building global citizenship, fostering distributed leadership and creating independent women.

Case study: Our Lady Of The Missions Primary School

Our Lady of the Missions is a very large, triple stream primary school. Staff continually reflect and share good practice to ensure learning is the focus of continuous improvement. Collegiality amongst staff, pupils, parents and indeed other schools is key in the success of this school.

Gylemuir is a large primary school situated within City of Edinburgh. This case study illustrates the ways in which the school provides learning experiences that prepare young people for life and work in the 21st century. Key features include developing an ethos of ambition, vision, leadership and working in partnership with the community.
