Journey to Excellence

Culture and ethos

All schools and centres need a vibrant and progressive culture and climate of continuous innovation.

The culture and ethos should promote respect as well as healthy and productive attitudes towards learning, life and work.

Schools must also develop an ethos of ambition and achievement, striving for the maximum for every learner.

Watch videos showing excellence in culture and ethos

  • Building skills at Kersland School
Video in which the staff of Kersland School outline their vision of the school as centre of excellence. In addition to helping young people to gain SQA and ASDAN qualifications, they focus on skills for life, including using a 'flat' where young people can develop practical, independent living skills like cooking, washing clothes and cleaning. • Enagaging with the local community at Inveravon Primary School
Video in which staff at Inveravon Primary School and members of the local community describe their partnerships. Inveravon is very much seen as the heart of the community with people supporting outdoor activities such as the garden, the sensory garden and woodcraft skills. The community also supports the after-school clubs and the parents and volunteers very much see themselves learning together with the children. • Pupil leadership making a difference at Monifieth High School
Video demonstrating how Monifieth High School has asked pupils to take on leadership roles and expand the role of the pupil council so learners are contributing to the direction of the school. The school used the Implemento proecess to examine what happens at the moment and how it can improve. Implemento is also being used by the Fair Trade Group. In both arenas students are coming up with suggestions and solutions to problems. Part of the Opening up the Future resource on Journey to Excellence website.
