Journey to Excellence

Learning and teaching

Learning and teaching is the core business of schools and other centres of learning.

Schools must ensure that children and young people have the highest quality learning experiences. A clear focus on outcomes for young people is essential, with lesson and programme planning that helps learners achieve to their fullest extent.

These learning and teaching aims lie at the very heart of Curriculum for Excellence.

Watch videos showing excellence in learning and teaching

  • 'My school report' at Inveravon Primary School
Video in which children and teachers explain how learners at Inveravon Primary School use weekly reflections to set themselves targets for skills they want to develop. They also set themselves longer term targets and write an annual report. The process allows them to take responsibility for their learning, assess how they have developed their strengths, think about strategies to address the areas where they are less strong and develop resilience. A parent also gives her view about the reports. Part of the Opening up the Future resource on Journey to Excellence website.
  • Building skills at Kersland School

In addition to helping young people to gain SQA and ASDAN qualifications, they focus on skills for life, including using a 'flat' where young people can develop practical, independent living skills like cooking, washing clothes and cleaning.
