Joint Audit of Investigation Records (Orkney)

The work of the Child Protection Committee (CPC) in reviewing child protection investigation records and improving services for children at risk of abuse and neglect.

What was the identified issue?

Managers wanted to ensure services were doing everything they could to keep children safe and meet their needs. They recognised they needed to make regular checks on what staff did when concerns about children were being investigated to ensure that practice was consistently good and continued to improve.

What have staff in services done together?

The CPC have given a small group of managers the task of reviewing investigation records on a regular basis, identifying any improvements which were needed and sharing their findings with staff. Managers from across services have agreed which cases to review and the timescales for carrying this out. They have held a series of regular meetings to identify areas for improvement. Thirty cases have been audited over a period of six months.  Reviews are continuing regularly.

What are the benefits for children/young people and families?

As a result of this work, important improvements have been made for vulnerable children and families.  Improvements have involved staff in all of the key services making changes to what they do. Staff have more guidance to help them protect children and support their families. Better interview rooms have been found so that, when concerns are being investigated, children can talk to staff in comfortable surroundings. Children and families are benefiting from staff keeping them more informed about what is happening while concerns are being investigated.
