Raising children’s awareness of domestic abuse, bullying and how to keep themselves safe. Encouraging them to develop positive relationships.
The Respect Programme, developed by the Zero Tolerance Charitable Trust, seeks to reduce violence against women and children by teaching children to respect themselves and others. Women’s Aid Orkney (WAO) and the Orkney Domestic Abuse Forum (DAF) use the Respect Programme to raise awareness of domestic abuse with children and young people, encouraging them to develop positive relationships.
WAO, the DAF and staff from Orkney Islands Council work together to train staff to deliver the Respect Programme to primary and secondary school children. So far, a total of 369 children and young people have benefited from the programme in six primary and two secondary schools.
The Respect Programme is helping children learn about important issues such as bullying, equality, healthy relationships and domestic abuse. It is enabling them to express their feelings and concerns and to understand how their behaviour can affect other people.
